They heard “the divine call from God”–that’s why the nuns and monks of the Catholic monasteries in Utah spend their lives engulfed in prayer instead of the hectic, money-oriented lifestyles of many modern Americans. Recently, the number of monasteries across the United States is declining, a phenomenon possibly related to our quick-fix lifestyles that encourage diverted and spliced attention spans from activities such as prayer and meditation. Indeed, as the monks and nuns of the early 20th century perish, few seek to replace them.
